Our mission
Rock island's mission is to provide students with a safe, exciting and informative climbing program. We believe that experiential learning is an active, dynamic process that is founded on activities that can be transferred to everyday experiences.

So, what is climbing?
Simply stated, it is ascending for the sheer pleasure of the ascent. Increasingly, many climbers are getting their first taste of climbing on portable walls or at indoor climbing gyms. Once climbers gain experience they find that they've entered a sport with many varieties and a 125-year history. For many it becomes a lifelong pursuit.

Is it safe?
Statistically, rock climbing is the safest of all the adventure sports. Why? It's simple. Rock climbing employs over a century's worth of technique refinements and technological improvements.

How does the program work?
The wall is brought to the school during normal school hours. Instead of participating in the regular gym activities for the day, each gym class comes outside and spends the gym period climbing. For smaller classes, all students are fitted with a harness and allowed to climb for the duration of class. For larger classes, the group is divided and each group climbs for a portion of the class.

Students normally get a minimum of two chances to climb and often get an opportunity to climb all four sides of the wall.

Knowledgeable instructors will be on hand to provide the necessary instruction and encouragement to introduce students to the sport of rock climbing.

The rock island exposure program does not prepare students for any type of unsupervised climbing. For those interested in learning more about the sport of rock-climbing, we offer an introductory climbing program.
